| PEDLEY -- Jurupa Valley sheriff's deputies arrested a man Tuesday afternoon almost one month after he fled from a traffic stop, said Sgt. Earl Quinata of the Riverside Sheriff's Department. Clinton Jeffrey Althizer, a 28-year-old parolee from the Pedley area, was being sought in connection to an incident on March 20, in which authorities believe he assaulted a U.S. Forest Service officer, Quinata said. About 4 p.m., deputies located Althizer near Limonite Avenue. "The only difference with the suspect was that he had blond hair this time," Quinata said. Althizer then took off in a vehicle at high speed and drove to an empty field at 61st Street, where he abandoned the car and took off on foot, entering a drainage pipe near. Deputies went in to pursue and began to search the manholes connected to the drainage pipe, bringing in a K-9 unit to assist. One of the dogs alerted officers to where Althizer was hiding. "Upon being found, the suspect fired several rounds at the dog," Quinata said. "Fortunately, the K-9 was not injured." Police returned fire and secured the area, calling in the Special Enforcement Bureau. "They established contact and after several hours of negotiation, got him to surrender," Quinata said. Althizer, who was injured in the incident, was arrested and taken to a local hospital to assess his injuries. It is unknown to what extent or how he was injured. Althizer's gun was eventually recovered in the drain, Quinata said.
